Inside Sweden 2007-06-01

It`s a facet of life in Sweden that many Swedes won`t ever experience. Inside Sweden meets a journalist who wanted to change all that – and spent a year in a one of this country`s refugee reception centres – and wrote a book about her experiences. One senior citizen dropped off a sawn-off shotgun and one couple were relieved to get rid of a weapon they`d been hiding for decades. Sounds more like the wild west than Scandinavia – but it`s just one story from the three-month weapons amnesty that ended yesterday. Also, a disturbing report this week uncovers violence against disabled women – and it`s often carried out by their caregivers.

About

SHOW

Kidnapped BBC Correspondent Speaks

Prager H1: BBC Correspondent Alan Johnston has been a hostage in Gaza since March 12. A video of him blaming the US, Israel and the UK for all the world’s problems has just been released… Norway sends money to Hamas – for civilian purposes. Oh, please. This is supporting terrorism, plain and simple… The world isn’t that morally complex. The problem is people just don’t want to face evil. It’s a lot easier and safer to attack GW. You can do that all day and not get hurt.

Prager H3: Per usual, callers set the agenda. Issues raised include: what does Dennis listen to on his iPod; does Dennis ever get booed at speeches; how does Dennis feel about chewing tobacco; does Dennis support the Cuban trade embargo; what happened to masculine stoicism; isn’t a consumption tax unfair to retirees because they’ve already paid their taxes; how does Dennis feel about Internet gambling.

OPEC Is Not in the House

by Jerry Taylor and Peter Van Doren

Jerry Taylor and Peter Van Doren are senior fellows. Peter Van Doren is also editor of
Regulation magazine.

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed a bill on a vote of 345-72 that would allow the federal government to sue OPEC for violations of America’s anti-trust laws. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the “No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act of 2007” (NOPEC) is probably the most ridiculous piece of legislation ever hammered through Congress. That serious people entertain this idea is a remarkable demonstration of the fact that, once the topic of conversation turns to oil, the human brain spontaneously short-circuits, nodal synapses fire randomly, and I.Q. points bleed out of the cranium and all over the kitchen floor.
