Northern Europes Rescue Boats Rushed To Gothenburg Sweden

This weekend in Gothenburg, Sweden: Rescue boats from the Northern European Countries of Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands and Britain are gathering together in Gothenburg harbor. A lot of us do not think about the rescue boats until there is a ferry accident or a Cruise liner disaster. If you are around Gothenburg Saturday June 2nd between 10am and 6pm you may want to visit the more then 70 different boats from various countries and take a tour and see for yourself the different features and talk to the rescue crews.

Sounds like good family fun!

FINNISH LIFEBOAT SOCIETY UPDATES ITS FLEET

The Finnish Lifeboat Society’s project of defining the lifeboat classes for its future fleet is nearly complete. The large, slow boats will be replaced by faster, smaller units.

The Society has decided on a fleet of boats from five rescue boat classes (PV I – PV V) and a rescue cruiser. The requirements for all lifeboat classes are a minimum speed of 30 knots, a capacity to operate independently and suitability to the Finnish climate conditions. The boats are meant specifically to be used by volunteer crews.

The availability of vessels may not be restricted to one supplier. The new lifeboat classes will be ratified by the Finnish Lifeboat Societys´s Council.

Six-metre PV I

The smallest boat, of the PV I class, is a 6.5-metre RIB (rigid inflatable boat), powered by one 115-horsepower diesel jet or an outboard motor. The maximum speed of the boat is 35 knots and it can be operated as an independent unit or as a support boat for a larger vessel. The PV I class boats take a crew of two.

This class will gradually replace the current Avon 4.0 and 5.4 RIBs and some of the current Atlantic 21 boats. The PV I class will be the largest class in the fleet of the Finnish Lifeboat Society.

THE FINNISH LIFEBOAT SOCIETY

The Finnish Lifeboat Society is the umbrella organization for voluntary maritime rescue associations in Finland.

We provide search and rescue services to people in distress at sea and on inland waters.

- 2,000 sea rescue volunteers
- over 140 rescue vessels
- over 13,000 members

- we conduct more than 1000 search and rescue missions annually

- we assist about 2400 people in waters under our watch every year

Finnish Lifeboat Society updates its fleetThe Finnish Lifeboat Society’s project of defining the lifeboat classes for its future fleet is nearly complete. The large, slow boats will be replaced by faster, smaller units.

Larger open boat PV II

PV II boats are approximately 7.5-metre RIBs. They can be operated as the sole vessel of a rescue station. PV II boats are equipped with a 115-hp twin diesel jet drive or outboard motors. The first boat of this class acquired by the Society, the Boomerang C-740, has a 115-hp four-stroke twin outboard motor. The boat reaches nearly 35 knots and is operated by a crew of three.

Boats in both of the smallest classes are fully equipped, from tools to a plotter and helmet intercoms.

Decked PV III

Although open rescue boats are functional and efficient rescue units, the core of the Society’s fleet is formed by decked rescue vessels. The smallest decked boats, PV III class, are approximately 10 metres long and equipped with a 250-hp twin diesel jet drive.

The boat is decked but has no sleeping facilities. PV III boats take a crew of three to four. The boat type can be used as an independent rescue unit for inland waterways or sheltered sea areas.

Sturdier PV IV

The larger size of the decked boats of PV IV class means better seaworthiness. The boats of this class will be used for sea areas and the most heavily trafficked inland stations.

PV IV boats are 12 metres long and powered by two diesel jet drives, with a total of 800 hp. The maximum speed of the boats is 35 knots and they take a crew of four. PV IV boats are intended to be used in medical emergencies, towage and search operations, transportation of stretcher patients, as well as crew and material deliveries under highly demanding conditions.

Offshore class PV V

The PV V class boats are the largest of the PV classes and are approximately 14 metres long. The planning-hull vessels are powered by two 700-hp diesel jet drives and their maximum speed is 30 knots. The PV V boats take a crew of five.

The PV V boats operate throughout the Baltic under all weather conditions. The boats have the best possible facilities and equipment for demanding rescue operations. Particular attention has been paid to the cabin design. The navigation system is based on four 19-inch TFT displays, and the boats have electronic joystick steering.

Boat acquisitions present a challenge

The Finnish Lifeboat Society will be decommissioning some twenty of vessels as outdated in the next few years. The acquisitions of their replacements are planned at the moment, based on the newly defined classes. The new system makes the acquisition and placement of new vessels easier and more efficient.

In 2005, the Society acquired ten new rescue boats representing PV I, PV II and PV III classes. The Society’s goal is to have acquired the first PV IV and PV V vessels by 2007.

A Step Forward in Sudan: Christian Efforts Bear Fruit

At last, the U.S. government has taken strong and decisive steps toward ending the massacre of Muslims in the Darfur region of Sudan. Economic sanctions announced Tuesday by President Bush will cut off the flow of cash to Sudanese government officials and rebel leaders who are persecuting the Sudanese people and hampering humanitarian efforts to aid the victims.

Swedish Cancer Rate Higher Due to Chernobyl Fallout

Increase in cancer in Sweden can be traced to Chernobyl

The incidence of cancer in northern Sweden increased following the accident at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl in 1986. This was the finding of a much-debated study from Linköping University in Sweden from 2004.

Was the increase in cancer caused by the radioactive fallout from Chernobyl or could it be explained by other circumstances? New research from Linköping University provides scientific support for the Chernobyl connection.

“This issue is important because the indicated increased risk may come to influence the prevailing exposure limits for the population. Enhanced knowledge of the risks entailed by radioactive radiation is key to work for radiation safety and makes it possible to prevent diseases,” says Martin Tondel, a physician and researcher in environmental medicine who will soon be defending his doctoral dissertation Malignancies in Sweden after the Chernobyl Accident in 1986.

In two studies using different methods, Martin Tondel has shown a small but statistically significant increase in the incidence of cancer in northern Sweden, where the fallout of radioactive cesium 137 was at its most intense.

A monument to the victims of the Chernobyl disaster at Moscow’s Mitino cemetery, where some of the firefighters who battled the flames and later died of radiation exposure are buried.

The nuclear meltdown provoked a radioactive cloud which floated over Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova, but also the European part of Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Lithuania, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Poland, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Ireland, France (including Corsica [14]) and the United Kingdom (UK) [15] [16]. The initial evidence that a major exhaust of radioactive material was affecting other countries came not from Soviet sources, but from Sweden, where on April 27 workers at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant (approximately 1100 km from the Chernobyl site) were found to have radioactive particles on their clothes.[17] It was Sweden’s search for the source of radioactivity, after they had determined there was no leak at the Swedish plant, which led to the first hint of a serious nuclear problem in the western Soviet Union. The rise of radiation levels had at time already been measured in Finland but it had not been published.

Contamination from the Chernobyl accident was not evenly spread across the surrounding countryside, but scattered irregularly depending on weather conditions. Reports from Soviet and Western scientists indicate that Belarus received about 60% of the contamination that fell on the former Soviet Union. However, the TORCH 2006 report stated that half of the volatile particles had landed outside Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. A large area in Russia south of Bryansk was also contaminated, as were parts of northwestern Ukraine. In Western Europe, measures were taken including seemingly arbitrary regulations pertaining to the legality of importation of certain foods but not others. In France some officials stated that the Chernobyl accident had no adverse effects – this was ridiculed as pretending that the radioactive cloud had stopped at the German and Italian borders.

The monument from Chisinau, Moldova dedicated to the victims of the Chernobyl disaster and the people who participated in the rescue mission.

In the immediate aftermath of the accident, two hundred and thirty-seven people suffered from acute radiation sickness, of whom thirty-one died within the first three months.[18][19] Most of these were fire and rescue workers trying to bring the accident under control, who were not fully aware of how dangerous the radiation exposure (from the smoke) was (for a discussion of the more important isotopes in fallout see fission products). 135,000 people were evacuated from the area, including 50,000 from Pripyat.

[edit] Rivers, lakes and reservoirs

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant lies next to the river Pripyat which feeds into the Dnieper river-reservoir system, one of the largest surface water systems in Europe. The radioactive contamination of aquatic systems therefore became a major issue in the immediate aftermath of the accident.[20] In the most affected areas of Ukraine, levels of radioactivity (particularly radioiodine: I-131, radiocaesium: Cs-137 and radiostrontium: Sr-90) in drinking water caused concern during the weeks and months after the accident. After this initial period, however, radioactivity in rivers and reservoirs was generally below guideline limits for safe drinking water.[20]

Bio-accumulation of radioactivity in fish[21] resulted in concentrations (both in western Europe and in the former Soviet Union) that in many cases were significantly above guideline maximum levels for consumption.[20] Guideline maximum levels for radiocaesium in fish vary from country to country but are approximately 1000 Bq/kg or 1 kBq/kg in the European Union.[22] In the Kiev Reservoir in Ukraine, activity concentrations in fish were several thousand Bq/kg during the years after the accident.[21] In small “closed” lakes in Belarus and the Bryansk region of Russia, activity concentrations in a number of fish species varied from 0.1 to 60 kBq/kg during the period 199092.[23] The contamination of fish caused concern in the short term (months) for parts of the UK and Germany and in the long term (years-decades) in the Chernobyl affected areas of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia as well as in parts of Scandinavia.[20]

[edit] Groundwaters

Groundwaters were not badly affected by the Chernobyl accident since radionuclides with short half-lives decayed away a long time before they could affect groundwater supplies, and longer-lived radionuclides such as radiocaesium and radiostrontium were adsorbed to surface soils before they could transfer to groundwaters.[24] Significant transfers of radionuclides to groundwaters have occurred from waste disposal sites in the 30 km exclusion zone around Chernobyl. Although there is a potential for off-site (i.e. out of the 30-km exclusion zone) transfer of radionuclides from these disposal sites, the IAEA Chernobyl Report[24] argues that this is not significant in comparison to current levels of washout of surface-deposited radioactivity.

[edit] Fauna and vegetation

After the disaster, four square kilometres of pine forest in the immediate vicinity of the reactor turned ginger brown and died, earning the name of the “Red Forest“, according to the BBC.[25] Some animals in the worst-hit areas also died or stopped reproducing. Most domestic animals were evacuated from the exclusion zone, but horses left on an island in the Pripyat River 6 km from the power plant died when their thyroid glands were destroyed by radiation doses of 150-200 Sv.[26] Some cattle on the same island died and those that survived were stunted because of thyroid damage. The next generation appeared to be normal.[26]

In the years since the disaster, the exclusion zone abandoned by humans has become a haven for wildlife, with nature reserves declared (Belarus) or proposed (Ukraine) for the area. Many species of wild animals and birds, which were never seen in the area prior to the disaster, are now plentiful, due to the absence of humans in the area.[25]

Swedish Woman Sentenced For Forcing Daughter to have Female Circumcision

The Swedish Supreme Court has now made the final ruling in the case with the 43-year old woman from Mölndal who is charged with, during the summer of 2001, having had her daughter undergo female circumcision during a visit to Somalia.

The sentence is set to three years in prison.

The woman also has to pay 450 000 Swedish Crowns (300 000 for the pain and suffering due to the circumcision and

150 000 for “violating the peace”) to her now 17-year old daughter.

The 43-year old woman herself has denied committing any crime and says that she hasn’t even been abroad at all since she came to Sweden in 1995.

The daughter nowadays live with her father in Gothenburg.

(Sweden introduced the first law of the Western world against female circumcision in 1982)

Last Day for Swedish Firearms Amnesty

Today, Thursday May 31st, is the last day of the Swedish Weapons Amnesty. During the three months that the amnesty has been going on, the police in the Västra Götalands region has gotten around 2000 weapons that have been handed in anonymously.

The weapon amnesty began in March. The thought behind the amnesty is that the number of illegal weapons in the country will decrease. Without the risk of being charged with illegal possession of firearms it has been possible to just go to the police and hand in weapons.

-With the help of the weapon amnesty we can gather up illegal weapons. A lot o these weapons have for example been stolen from homes where the person has passed away, says Ingemar Nilsson, police commissioner in Västra Götaland.

Sweden does have a large amount of weapons, many active hunters and a great deal of weapons passed down through generations. In the Västra Götalands region there are 86 000 holders of weapon licenses and 217 600 registered weapons. Every year 2200 weapons are being reported stolen or misplaced throughout the country.

The first time that Sweden had a weapon amnesty was in 1993 and then the police in the Västra Götaland collected2121 weapons and parts of weapons and 2 tons of ammunitions.

This year it has been a bit slower. The police estimate a lesser amount of weapons, but more ammunition.

Exactly how many weapons have been handed in is still unclear. On June 10th they will have completed the count. After that the results are to be reported to the government.

Among the weapons handed in to the police in Västra Götaland there is everything from historical weapons to modern automatic weapons. All weapons that have been handed in that no one makes a claim for (some of them have been stolen and will be given back to the rightful owner if possible) end up at the governments criminal technicians laboratory where they will be destroyed.

Swedish Nanny Murder Follow Up

Killer Charged with murder may have committed more crimes

The 24-year old who is accused of having murdered the Croatian au-pair Jelena Ivanisevic out in LÃ¥ngedrag during the Easter holiday is now suspected of having committed several other crimes.

Two women recently reported that he had attempted to rape them, events that are said to have taken place in March earlier this year.

The reason why the 24-year old is now being connected to other criminal activities mostly has to do with his very characteristic appearance. He is extremely short and of Indian decent. When this description began circulating in the media, two women out in Västra Frölunda reacted.

About a month prior to the murder they claim to have been attacked by a man of just Indian decent and they could also in other ways describe a man matching the 24-year old’s appearance.

The 24-year old is now accused of three major crimes. One is a rape of a former girlfriend, back in January 2006. He was arrested at the time of the incident, but later released due to lack of evidence.

This investigation has been brought up again as the recent events has been shedding some light on what happened.

Then there is the double attempt of rape against two women at the end of march this year.

Third, but definitely not least – the murder of the 20-year old Jelena Ivanisevic in April this year.

According to the psychiatric evaluation, the 24-year old has absolutely no mental problems of any kind.

Friends of the 24-year old have testified that one of his major interests is girls, and he is considered as very fixated on sex. He also worked extra as a bartender at a porn club in the center of Gothenburg.

There are indications that might point to Jelena Ivanisevic having been sexually abused in connection with the murder, but the prosecutor and police have so far refused to reveal any details.

The prosecutor is going to hand in the charges against the 24-yearold, but as the case keeps getting bigger and bigger he has asked for a little more time.

Zimbabwe was recently elected to chair the U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), to the dismay of human-rights groups and nations, like the United States, that would like the United Nations to take its responsibilities seriously. This election is more than a travesty; it is a cruel demonstration of disregard for the suffering of the people of Zimbabwe on the part of the U.N. and those African countries that helped Zimbabwe to the chairmanship.

Sweden’s Green Party Picks GAY Fight With Russia

This Weekend marked the 14th year of the abolishment of the criminality of homosexuality in Moscow. While being homosexual is no longer a crime, homosexuality has not been forced by Russia’s Government and Militant Gay activists into Russia’s schools, government institutions and culture. Russia is still by and large a people with traditional values, much like the people throughout the western world. Here in the Western world tolerance is interpreted by indoctrination and any thought or spoken word that is not in harmony with GAY activists is called Homophobic.

Moscow does not want this seen in their streets, Why?

Many people believe that what homosexuals do or how they live their lives is of no concern to the rest of society except when laws and policies are adopted to force society to not only tolerate but actually embrace the homosexual lifestyle. This is evident in many countries by the forced schooling of children and forced re-education of employees. Many people hold religious beliefs and moral values that are diametrically opposed to Homosexuality. This does not mean that violence or discrimination against homosexuals should take place or be condoned by our governments.

What Parent Wouldn’t want to bring their Child To See this?

I personally do not want to see the Sunday Wife Swappers Parade, The Annual Bondage and Discipline Parade, or the various Bug Foot Squasher Sex Parades. The Furries Parade might be fun for the kids to see, as long as the other activities that are on public display during these parades is not displayed. Many people are offended by the naked, near naked, and simulated Sex presentations of Marchers and bystanders in Gay parades.

Why do people think that marches like this should be allowed in every city in the world?

That said, I have been in New York City to see the Village Gay Parade. Like many, I laughed at the antics, costumes and extravagance of the participants. I am not Gay, but I sort of think that if I were GAY I would take offense to the comical characters that are portrayed in todays TV shows. Why does being GAY have to take on the role of being the freak show or comic relief? The representations certainly do not represent the lifestyle of most people in the homosexual community. That is sort of what I think about the parades. Why does it have to be in the middle of town and demonstrate the most extreme elements of the gay life style within communities that by and large do not share the values exhibited and are forbidden by law to express their disapproval?

Not for Nothing, I don’t mind seeing something like this

everyday of the week but you know even my wife

doesn’t want this paraded past me on the Streets.

I know lots of families that for one reason or

another think that the kind of activities

that go on at these parades are

Not Suitable For Public Viewing.

My wife and I have been watching this British TV-series, “New Street Law” (here in Sweden it is called “Advokaterna pÃ¥ New Street”). One of the characters in the series is gay… That’s it – he has a boyfriend instead of a girlfriend, and that’s all there is to it! There is no joking around about this, it is a serious show, he is not the funny sidekick or the comic relief in any way, he’s just doing his job like everybody else, and is treated like everybody else. We really like the show, and the fact that one of the characters is gay, well – it just shows how things OUGHT to be. “He’s gay” – so what?!? There really IS no need to go on and on about it, he doesn’t flaunt it and noone makes jokes about it, that’s just the way it is…

Russia 14 years ago removed the legal prosecution of homosexuality, today they do not want extravagant Gay Parades in the middle of Moscow. Moscow’s Mayor Yuri Luzhkov had called the gay pride parades “Satanic” and vowed that it would never be permitted in his city, this was with respect to the Russian Orthodox Church and in keeping with the sentiment of the majority of his citizens. There are no laws in Russia like countries of the European Union that force people to embrace homosexuality. Homosexuality in Russia is legally tolerated but not endorsed, promoted or taught.

This past weekend 40 or so people flew to Russia knowing the parade was not granted a permit and that any action to cause a public spectacle would be illegal. The purpose of the plane trip to Moscow was to cause trouble and make headlines in the World Newspapers and Television. That goal was achieved. The consequences of their actions on the gay community in Russia have not been measured yet.

What are the plans for the Gay Parade in Gaza, Riyadh, and other places in the world where homosexuality is not even legal?

In an effort to aggravate Russia more, a group of Swedish politicians have invited Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov to attend Stockholm’s Gay Pride festival on August 4th of this year.

Stockholm city council Green Party leader Yvonne Ruwaida states “We have invited the mayor to visit our festival and to see how we work with HBT (homo-, bi- and transsexual) issues here. It is important to deal with homophobia,”

“Homophobia” is the catch word to demonize anyone that does not embrace homosexuality or the policies that the homosexual movement are pushing. In practice, if you do not agree with anything the gay movement says, then you are homophobic.

The Russians Feel This is not Proper Street Attire.

Many people feel the same.

Some feel that the display of sex and

performance of sex acts is a private matter,

not something to be paraded.

Go Figure?

This in your face legislating morality has gone pretty far, too far. People should have a right to engage in a lifestyle of their choice. I do not feel that someones selection of sexual partner should be a lightning rod for discrimination or violence. It is however, a totally different story to force that lifestyle down the throats of those that do not share those values, and use legal means to indoctrinate the rest of society in a minority culture.

Swedish Motor Cycle Gang Connected in Stolen Property Fencing Ring

Seven men, several of them with connections to Bandidos, one of the criminal motor cycle gangs here in Sweden, were taken into police custody on Wednesday, accused of involvment in several major robberies that had taken place during the spring in Borås, Mölnlycke, Mölndal and Gothenburg (these locations are pretty close together, they all could be considered part of the “Gothenburg region”).

Three men have already been in police custody for a while, accused of having fenced stolen cellphones.

It was at 3 am on the morning of May 15th that the police raided an apartment on Rimfrostgatan out on Hisingen. The 38-year old tennant was arrested together with three other men. In the apartment, the police found a large number of stolen cellphones.
The 38-year old used to run a store on Hisingen but then found himself in personal bankruptcy with large debts. He told the police during questioning that he had been contacted by “a buddy”, a 21-year old man, who just happens to be the brother of one of the men convicted for the robbery at Landvetter airport last year. The 21-year old said that HE had a friend who wanted to sell cellphones. They then went to a house to pick up the cellphones.

The 38-year old explained that “the tax people take all the money I make so I try to make a little business on the side…” He also said that “everybody” knows that he is in trouble and that he “wants to work or buy and sell”.

The 38-year old, the 21-year old friend and the man who handed over the cellphones to them were arrested, and a fourth man was taken into custody but the evidence against him weren’t strong enough to hold him.

The investigation continued, and on Monday morning the police hit another ten locations, among them the Bandidos clubhouse on Marieholmsgatan in Gothenburg. Nine people were taken into custody, and on Tuesday seven of them were put in jail.

Among the seven there is a 30-year old Bandidos-member, who begun his criminal career in the so called “BMW-gang” several years ago. This gang were known for this particular type of break ins and robberies (“smash-and-grab”) that the people in custody are now accused of.

The 30-year old Bandidos-member was also a suspect in the Landvetter airport robbery but was never prosecuted.

Another one of the men in custody is a 22-year old member of the Bandido’s supporter club, known as the “X-team”.

The initial trial hearings began on Wednesday morning.

Gunshots At Swedish Police In Stockholm – Armed Bandits Escape

Robbers opened fire on police officers in Stockholm on Tuesday
following a raid on a secure cash transport vehicle.

The police got an alarm shortly after lunch time, about a security
guard being robbed of the bags of money that he had just collected at
a Konsum grocery store. The robbery was carried out as the guard
returned to his vehicle outside the store in Täby, in northern
Stockholm.

The armed robber escaped together with an accomplice, who was
waiting in a getaway car nearby the cash transport.

The robbers made away in the car, and were later seen by a witness
changing into a green Volkswagen Passat in Roslags Näsby. They
then drove towards central Solna, also in the north of Stockholm.

Police caught up with the car, whereupon the robbers fired shots
at the police car.

The police immediately stopped their car, at that point it wasn’t
a good idea to pursuit the car chase. The police were completely
surprised when the men opened fire, and did not respond to it.

It is not known how many shots were fired. Apparently a gate post
of a nearby house had been shot at, the police were examining bullets
and bullet holes on both the police car and the gate post.

The getaway car was abandoned on Östervägen in Solna,
which has now been sealed off by police.

Neither the police officers nor the security guard were harmed
during the robbery.

An investigation has been started into the incident, according to
police spokeswoman Ann-Charlotte Wejnäs. Both getaway cars have
been impounded by police, and witnesses in the area are being
interviewed.

Apparently, the two robbers continued on foot, and as they are
both armed, the police have about 30 patrols out, heavily armed with
machine guns, wearing bullet proof vests, scouting the area, as well
as several helicopters.

When the second getaway car was found, the police sent a SWAT team
to an address nearby where the robbers might be hiding out, and they
entered the house and stormed two apartments where they thought the
robbers might be hiding – only to find them both empty.

The police had sealed off the area around the house where they
thought the robbers might be hiding, and several other apartment
houses around it had been sealed off as well, the people living there
had to go in and out through back doors all afternoon. The house
where the suspects were believed to be hiding was completely off
limits.

Apparently they now have descriptions of what both men look like,
they didn’t wear masks or anything, but as of yet the police does not
want to go into any more details.
