First mothers’ day for 47 000 mums

As many as 47 000 new mums will be honoured for the first time on Sunday when Sweden celebrates mothers’ day. So many women have become mothers during the last 12 months.

Mothers’ day was introduced in 1919 in Sweden by Cecilia Bååth-Holmberg and has been celebrated on the last Sunday in May since then. The tradition originates in the USA where the day has been celebrated since 1908. In the USA and many other countries, mothers’ day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May while Norwegians, for example, celebrate the day in February.

Close to 2.6 million mothers between the ages of 14 and 107 can be honoured on mothers’ day. On average, they are 55 years old. Our first-time mums are on average 29 years old on Sunday. Of these, 1 600 are under 20 and 800 are over 40.

Nearly half of all mothers have two children to celebrate them. The few mothers with the most children can expect to receive 17 mothers’ day cards.

On Sunday, 5.7 million children and adults will celebrate their mothers. Slightly less than 1.9 million of these are children under 18 years of age living at home. Slightly over 1.1 million women can both celebrate their mothers and be celebrated themselves. At least 170 000 of these mothers have also a grandmother on their mothers’ side and 1 600 also have a great-grandmother on their mothers’ side to celebrate.
