Inside Sweden 2007-05-11
Sweden`s trade union movement in shock today after union members show surprising support for the country`s far right xenophobic party. As Swedish Radio`s special climate week wraps up, Inside Sweden looks at the impact of our environmentally unfriendly lifestyles on developing countries. And a little later in the programme, male circumcision has been historically less common in Sweden – than in many other parts of the world, but now the tragic ramifications of ceremonial and often illegal circumcisions being performed in multicultural Sweden`s is forcing authorities to act.

Smoke in a Movie and Get an R Rating
Prager H1: The Motion Picture Association intends to place smoking on the same level as sex, violence and drug use. Prager H3: Per usual, callers set the agenda. Issues raised include: when do you decide when to forgive to someone; how do you comfort your wife after she’s had a miscarriage; what does a Jew have to do to get into heaven; why don’t we focus more attention on Saudi funding of anti-American schools in the US and abroad; why doesn’t Allen change the bumper music more often; isn’t smoking a religious sin.

Open Lines

Prager H3: Per usual, callers set the agenda. Issues raised include: when do you decide when to forgive to someone; how do you comfort your wife after she’s had a miscarriage; what does a Jew have to do to get into heaven; why don’t we focus more attention on Saudi funding of anti-American schools in the US and abroad; why doesn’t Allen change the bumper music more often; isn’t smoking a religious sin.

On the cards: legislation to combat online grooming. Experts go after sexual predators who target youngsters on the Net. Finland`s newly re-elected Prime Minister visits Sweden. A game plan against global warming topped the agenda. And many Swedes pop in a pouch of moist oral snuff instead of lighting up. But a study suggests that the snus honeymoon may be over, as scientists connect it to cancer.

About

SHOW

Tony Blair Steps Down

Prager H1: The British Prime Minister will leave office in June after 10 years on the job. As usual, he was very eloquent as he reviewed his tenure. Dennis deconstructs his comments and finds much to admire and much to be concerned about… Dennis talks to Sasha Issenberg, a journalist who has writes for Slate and Washington Monthly. He has written a new book about Dennis’ favorite food — The Sushi Economy: Globalization and the Making of a Modern Delicacy.

They’re Not Going to Surrender on a Battleship

Prager H2: Our enemies are suicide bombers and guerilla armies. We can’t stop a Saudi sneaking into Iraq and blowing himself up in a market. So, what does it mean that we have won or we have lost? This is a different kind of war, but not less critical because it’s not so easily defined… Dennis talks to Mike Gallagher, nationally syndicated radio talk show, who is in Greensburg, KS, a town of two thousand which was wiped off the map late last week by a horrific tornado.

SAS wild strike continues

The Danish SAS staff strike continues, and all flights to and from Landvetter, Gothenburg have been cancelled, at least until 3 pm today.

It’s the Danish cabin staff that are protesting against their deteriorated working conditions.

Yesterday 290 flights were cancelled, and today so far 149 flights have been cancelled.

What happens after 3 pm is still unsure, sometimes the cancelling information doesnät come until right before departure is scheduled. Copenhagen travellers are urged not to come to Landvetter airport, but reschedule their flights through SAS or their travelling agency.

The union is trying to get the wild strike to cease, the cabin staff is urged to go back to work, but unfortunatley this might go on until SAS are willing to discuss an agreement.

The union and SAS are going to have a meeting today at 2 pm, to try to get some kind of agreement together, this is why things are a little scetchy as of right now regarding what happens after 3 pm.

Sweden – Union agreement may be illegal

Here in Sweden we have rules that regulate just what kind of personal information that is given out. The construction workers’ union and their new deal might violate these laws on personal integrity.

According to the agreement, Byggnads is to be given salary information from the work sites, along with names and personal numbers of all the workers, even those who are not members of the Byggnads Union.

The Computer Inspection Department are now going to look into this matter.

Negotiations Short Circuit – Sweden Electricians on Strike

The Electricians Association’s overtime blockade started at midnight. This after the Swedish Electricians Association turned down the negotiations offer.

The electricians situation is very similar to the one the construction workers had just a few days ago, and unless the electricians get their demands met the strike will escalate, with a lockout starting the first week of May.

We are unsure about all the details in this matter, but we will do a follow up shortly.

113 departures were canceled yesterday, and at least a 100 flights will be canceled today.

Wild strike among SAS cabin personnel

It is the SAS cabin staff at Kastrup/Copenhagen that is causing problems for the traffick to and rom Landvetter, Gothenburg.

Two early planes managed to take off before the cabin crew at Kastrup went on a wild strike.

According to SAS at Kastrup all flights to and from Copenhagen are canceled until 2 pm.

SAS in Landvetter are having trouble getting an idea of the situation, but three departures, 09.20 am, 10.40 am and 1.10 pm are canceled. 65-70 passengers per fligt are affected. They are trying to reschedule those who aren’t going directly to Copenhagen, most passengers are going to destinations around the world. They still haven’t started to order in any buses to transport passengers elsewhere.

An informations meeting will take place during the day.

Yesterday at Kastrup at least 10 000 passengers were affected by the strike, since their planes weren’t going to take off. 400 of these people had to stay overnight at the airport, there just weren’t enough hotel rooms to be found.

Giuliani versus Obama on Terror With Dennis Prager

Prager H1: Rudi Giuliani made a speech yesterday in which he stated that if the Democrats win the White House, we will go on the defensive against terrorism. His statement angered Barack Obama. He thinks Rudi impugned his patriotism. How did Rudi do that?… Why is Pat Tillman’s ultimate sacrifice any less heroic because he was killed by friendly fire?

The War is Lost If We Say It’s Lost With Dennis Prager

Prager H2: It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If Harry Reid gets his way and cuts funding for the war, yeah, it’s lost… Dennis talks to Max Boot, senior fellow in national security studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, who has just returned from Iraq to get a fresh perspective on what’s going on there now.

Should We Have Gone In? What Should We Do Now? With Dennis Prager
Prager H3: These are two totally separate questions. The first one makes for interesting dinner discussion, but no longer has much relevance. The second question, no matter what side of the political divide you’re on, is really all that matters now.

Restaurant and Hotel union on strike

The restaurant business might have a strike coming up on May 8th.

The union has made a demand for salary raise, they want at least 1000 crowns more a month, that is 5,7 percent of the total salary today.

The unions demands aren’t impossible, so hopefully they will be able to settle this without a strike.
