Research and experimental development (R&D) in Sweden 2005

R&D investments in Sweden high on an international scale

Investments in R&D in relation to GDP in Sweden are high in international comparisons. In spite of the fact that the investments in R&D in Sweden decreased in 2005, only Israel has higher investments in R&D in relation to GDP. Among the Nordic countries, the biggest increases in the R&D to GDP ratio since the beginning of the 1990s occurred in Finland and Sweden.

Total expenditure on R&D amounted to SEK 103.8 billion in 2005, which is an increase from SEK 97.1 billion in 2003. Despite this increase, Sweden’s investments in R&D as a share of GDP have fallen slightly from 3.95 percent in 2003 to 3.88 percent in 2005. This is in spite of the fact that Statistics Sweden surveyed more units in 2005. Small enterprises (10-49 employees) and county councils and municipalities are included in the regular R&D surveys from 2005 onwards and, together, they account for the increase. If these sectors are excluded, R&D expenditures amounted to SEK 95.7 billion or 3.58 percent of GDP in 2005. In comparison, the R&D to GDP ratio in Finland and Israel, which like Sweden have high R&D investments in relation to GDP, increased between 2003 and 2005.

R&D expenditure in relation to GDP per sector, percent

No data on the R&D to GDP ratio for the private non-profit sector is presented by OECD

Intramural R&D in Sweden differs from many of the EU countries, as it is predominantly performed in two sectors, the business enterprise sector and the higher education sector. The expenditure on enterprises´ intramural R&D in Sweden amounted to 74 percent of total expenditure on intramural R&D in Sweden in 2005. Expenditure in the higher education sector on intramural R&D amounted to 21 percent of the total expenditure on intramural R&D in Sweden in 2005. A total of 95 percent of the person-years were performed in these two sectors in 2005.

Person-years performed in different sectors in 2005, percent

The structure of the business enterprise sector R&D

R&D activities in Sweden are to a large extent concentrated to a small number of enterprises and to a few parts of the industry. Companies with more than 500 employees account for 74 percent of the total expenditure on R&D in the business enterprise sector, and the 20 most R&D intensive companies account for 62 percent of the total expenditure on R&D in the business enterprise sector. Small enterprises (10-49 employees) account for 8 percent of the total expenditure on R&D in the business enterprise sector. Small enterprises’ expenditure on R&D, as a share of the total expenditure on R&D in the business enterprise sector, is in a middle position when comparing to the other member countries of the EU.
The big city regions dominate the R&D activities

In Sweden, R&D activities are to a large extent concentrated to the counties where the biggest companies are localized, as well as to regions with universities and university colleges. Stockholm, Västra Götaland county and Skåne county together account for 77 percent of the total expenditure on R&D in the business enterprise sector and 74 percent of the total person-years performed in the business enterprise sector. When regional expenditure in R&D is measured as a share of regional GDP, the big city regions in Sweden are among the top in the EU[1].

The impact of Swedish research

Expenditure on intramural R&D and the number of person-years devoted to R&D can be seen as an input measure of all R&D-related activities. Citation indices for scientific articles can be used as a measurement of the impact of research and its importance. In broad terms, the level of citations is a reflection of how Swedish research is noticed in the rest of the scientific world. Citation indices can thus be used to describe the quality of research. It should however be analysed with caution. Looking at citations of Swedish research, we can see that Swedish research is cited approximately 13 percent above the world average.

Patents are also used an indicator for research. Internationally, Sweden has a high number of patents measured per million inhabitants.

When the share of Swedish companies with innovative activity is compared internationally, Swedish companies are above the average of EU countries.

[1] Regional expenditure in intramural R&D as a share of regional GDP is measured on NUTS2 level (Nomenclature des Unités Territoriales Statistiques) which is a breakdown of a country in regions used by the EU for reporting on statistics on a regional level.

Communist Leader does a European Union “John Kerry”

Should Sweden Stay In EU? Sweden’s Communists Left still says “Yes”

Sweden’s Communist Party, now stealthily known as the Left Party has been against membership and interaction with the European Union from the start. This should be no surprise as Sweden’s Communists once publicly voice favor for the Communist Soviet Government. Now it seems that the former leader of Sweden’s communist party, Gudrun Schyman is now publicly reversing her opinion on participation in the European Union. While not embracing the EU she has recently stated that pulling out of the EU would be unintelligent”. Why would a former communist leader who is no longer in the leadership suddenly pull a “John Kerry flip flop?”

Communist Leader does a “John Kerry”

Will Sweden’s Left of Center political parties find their ranks infiltrated with former Communist Party Leaders? Sweden’s new moderate leadership is working against the well entrenched socialist and communist old dogs who have slowed Sweden’s economic growth. As long time communist leaders slide towards center we will all have to keep our eyes open. Old time Communists still in party power do not have reasons to voice a different opinion as Gudrun Schyman has done and as always hold to their “NO” to the European Union.

General Aspects of the Swedish Electoral System(English)

The Parliament of the Kingdom of Sweden, the Riksdag, is composed of 349 members directly elected by universal adult suffrage for a maximum term of four years.

Members of the Riksdag are elected by a two-tier proportional representation (PR) system. A total of 310 seats are filled in twenty-nine multi-member electoral constituencies. Permanent constituency seats, which are allocated among the constituencies in proportion to the size of their electorates, are distributed according to the adjusted odd-number or modified Sainte-Laguë method of PR. Voters may cast a ballot for a constituency party list, or for a specific candidate.

Europe’s Communists are Well Organized and it’s indoctrinated Youth Fights Blindly for Communist Growth

The European wide anti-communist campaign finds its expression in the anti-communist attacks that are in run in some European countries through the penalization of organizations and their activities, prohibition, imprisonment and torture of its members, establishment of anti-communist foundations, memorials and museums, forbidding of communist symbols etc.

NATO – Noble Mariner Program comes to Gothenburg.

Sweden to Send Army to Darfur

Swedish Soldiers Wanted in Darfur

Ban Ki-Moon, the UN Secretary General has asked Sweden’s Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt to join a future UN peacekeeping force in Darfur. This Happened when Fredrik Reinfelt met the UN chief in New York yesterday, Monday May 14th when he was in New York.

Reinfeldt said “He(Ban Ki-Moon) wants to see a Swedish involvement, and there are currently discussions underway about whether we should join Norway to create a unit,”

Recently polls in Sweden indicated that Swedish people do not want further involvement with EU military actions, including peacekeeping or actions with NATO.

Reinfeldt told Ban Ki-Moon that Sweden would be prepared to join in the peace effort under the right circumstances. “We can’t give the go-ahead until we know what the force looks like, what security will be like and what the leadership will be”. The important issue as other countries have mentioned is that “it is important for Europe to realize that it will probably be under African command,” said Reinfeldt.

Snus is still better than cigarettes

The pros and cons of the Swedish snus (raw tobacco ground to a powder, rehydrated and “fermented” – very different rom chewing tobacco such as Skoal) has been debated over and over again. Today there is a total sales ban of snus in the rest of the EU countries, as well as in some countries outside the EU. A new study might shine some light on this whole issue. Swedish snus does not increase the risks of getting oral cavity cancer, nor lung cancer. It does however give a SLIGHTLY increased risk of getting pancreatic cancer, but the numbers are very low, so low that one wonders if it really is due to using snus – let’s say that 10 000 men have used snus for a period of ten years, then eight to nine of these 10 000 men will get pancreatic cancer. If you have a group of 10 000 men that neither used snus or cigarettes during that same period of time, then four to five of THOSE men will get pancreatic cancer.

Cigarettes are MUCH worse than snus, smokers are much worse off than snus users, but you don’t see any sales bans on cigarettes anywhere, do you?!? Still, there IS that smoking ban in public restaurants and so on… but SNUS doesn’t PRODUCE any smoke, so we can simply not understand why there is a sales ban on snus when you can buy cigarettes anywhere!

If smokers went over to using snus, sure, it’s still nicotine and it still isn’t absolutely healthy, but the smokers would live longer!

Moscow Violence, EU Protest and Estonia moves Monument

EU Protest Over Moscow Violence

Photo: Mikhail Metzel/Scanpix

Sweden and other EU nations have called on Russia to remove violent demonstrators from in front of the Estonian Embassy in Moscow.

The Moscow protests came after violent clashes between police and ethnic Russian residents of the Estonian capital of Tallinn when Estonian authorities moved a statue of a Soviet soldier from the center to a suburban cemetary.

Estonians regard the statue as a symbol of Soviet occupation, while Russians see it as a symbol of the struggle against fascism.

The New Kingdom of Europe – Sweden

Only 40% of Swedes are in Favor Of the European Union

Wednesday in Stockholm. Professor Sören Holmberg, reported in Swedish Newspapers that a recent postal survey sent to 6,000 Swedes by the SOM Institute last autumn showed that only 40% of Swedes were in favor of the European Union.

Only 10 Percent of Swedes Think that adding Turkey to the EU is a good idea

Responses in the survey found Swedes do not want Turkey in the EU. In my conversations with Swedish people there is apprehension and sometimes anger that lesser developed countries are being admitted to the EU. Many people do not want the economic drain and others do not want the immigration problem to be compounded. When East and West, Germany was unified the economic burden was tremendous. Who benefits from Turkey being admitted to the European Union. Clearly Swedes do not feel Sweden benefits or the current membership of the EU would benefit.

Most Swedes also do not believe Swedish participation European Union Military Peacekeeping Missions is a good idea.

The European Union failed in it’s recent attempt at adaptation of a cohesive Constitution. In countries where the citizens were allowed to vote for the constitution, the EU constitution was rejected.

Who exactly is pushing this European Union down on the people of Europe?

Do the citizens of Europe benefit by the formation of a European Kingdom ruled by special interest groups and Liberal Elites?

The European Media and the Swedish media have all joined with the to put the most positive spin on the extension of powers of the European Union.

Swedes are angered when Swedish Laws are challenged by New EU Laws or when European Union Courts rule that Swedish Laws are subservient to EU legislation.

The majority of Europeans have not approved the adaptation of new constitutional powers for the European Union. The Elites and the media monkeys rant and rave about the European Union and insist on moving blindly into deeper commitments that erode individual nations sovereignty.

Aspects of the European Union regarding free trade have been been positive. There have however been conflicts and real problems do in fact exist.

Dangerous drugs are shipped daily into Sweden which are legal and unrestricted by EU Law but are in fact addictive and illegal under Swedish Law.

Believe it or not, but there are Social Welfare benefits that exist in the EU that have not been adopted, budgeted or planned for by the Swedish government. Who will pay for all the expected freeloaders now unrestricted by boarders within the EU?

There are more questions then answers when it comes to Sweden’s involvement in the European Union.

Caution is needed before we give the EU any more power over the Swedish government. Sweden should participate within the EU but maintain it’s own identity, sovereignty and Culture.

Hard-Wired to Connect: The Field of Social Neuroscience

You’ve heard the old saw before: Science is one thing, religion another—that on one hand, science deals with hard facts, while religion deals with unverifiable beliefs and inflexible dogmas. In fact, these days we are hearing an awful lot from fanatical atheists like Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion, who say that Christianity is actually a threat to science: that religion and science are fundamentally at odds.
