A motorist in Helsingborg, down in the south of Sweden, has been ordered to pay back over a quarter of a million kronor in disability benefits after claiming to be blind for a period of ten years.

The person in question was caught driving a car on three separate occasions while at the same time receiving benefits totaling 268,000 kronor ($38,500).
The Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) explained its decision to request reimbursement in a letter to the individual concerned:

“While investigating your case in the autumn of 2006, we received information suggesting that you cannot be considered sightless. It was found that you drove a car in January 1999, received a fine for again driving a car in May 2004, and were involved in a traffic accident in July 2006 in which you yourself were the driver.”
