Stockholm Liberals ‘want to sack Leijonborg’

The Liberal Party looks set to come one step closer to ejecting leader Lars Leijonborg. The party’s Stockholm district is due to withdraw its support for the veteran politician, according to SVT.Seven districts have already said they want to sack Leijonborg. As the largest district in the country, the withdrawal of Stockholm’s support will be a major blow to the party leader. According to SVT, the party’s SkÃ¥ne district is also likely to withdraw support, with the Gothenburg chapter deciding its position on Monday evening.

Dissatisfaction with Leijonborg, the longest-serving Swedish party leader, follows a collapse in the Liberals’ support at the election. From a 13.4 share of the vote in 2002, the party garnered only 7.5 percent of the vote last year.

Any dismissal of Leijonborg has the potential to rock the Alliance government, in which he is education minister. In the event of Leijonborg being ejected as leader, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt would have to consult with the new Liberal leader about whether he could stay in his post.

Maria Wallhager, chairwoman of the Liberals’ Stockholm district, said she would release a statement on the issue on Monday morning.
